Electric Pallet Truck Existing Course

Ratios and Minimum Training Duration –

3:1:1-Times can range from 6 Hours and 30 Minutes to 10 Hours

2:1:1 – Times can range from 5 Hours and 30 Minutes to 8 Hours and 30 Minutes

1:1:1 – Times can range from 4 Hours and 30 Minutes to 7 Hours

Objective

  • By the end of this course, candidates will be able to discuss and demonstrate: • Safe and efficient operation of a Pallet Truck within the workplace, including their duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the risks associated with truck use.
  • Pre-use inspection, appropriate maintenance tasks and reporting processes.
  • Authorisation to operate arrangements.

Location

Classroom and practical training area. Suitable access to an appropriate practical training area must be available. The practical training area must be clearly identified and protected, and should be segregated from normal working activities.

Equipment

A suitably maintained, appropriate truck, with sufficient palletised loads available for use during training. Session equipment is detailed at the beginning of each session.

Candidate Specification

All candidates will have evidence of operating pallet/stacker trucks but will not have undergone formal training on the equipment. Additionally, candidates should be reasonably fit, both physically and mentally, have the learning ability and potential to become competent operators and be over the mummum age of 10 years except in ports, where they must be at least 18 years old, unless they are undergoing a suitable course of training, properly supervised by a competent person. Children under 16 should never operate lift trucks. Candidates selected for this course should be reliable and have a responsible attitude towards the workplace

Who Should Attend the Course?

It is anticipated that trainees attending the RTITB Electric Pallet/Stacker Truck – Existing Course will have some previous experience (possibly self-taught) and will be familiar with the steering and operating characteristics of an Electric Pallet/Stacker Truck but will not have had the benefit of adequate, formal training in basic operating skills. However, they wish to gain a formal, nationally recognised qualification in the safe use of Electric Pallet/Stacker Trucks.

Successful delegates will gain a better understanding of current relevant legislation, best practice and refresh their skills and ability in the safe use of Electric Pallet/Stacker Truck in line with current approved methods and manufacturer’s instructions. The course agenda includes:

  • Introduction to the lift truck to be used
  • Pre-use inspection and take over maintenance
  • Controls and instruments
  • Weight assessment
  • Starting, moving and stopping the truck
  • Handling laden and unladen pallets
  • Operation of hydraulic controls
  • Stacking/de-stacking – free standing and in racking
  • Safety code testing
  • Practical test of basic operating skills
  • Written test of operating knowledge
